Advanced Interaction Design – Janne Bach

Advanced Interaction Design

Exploring design programs and materials

Description

The course Advanced Interaction Design took place during two semesters and gave us time to immerse into different design technologies and materials. The course was to a greater extent about getting knowledge about and experimented with these different fields rather than ending up with a finished and useful design concept or product.

While we were making use of all our design methods and techniques we had acquired so far during our education as a matter of course, regarding subjects such as brainstorming, design concept, participatory design, sketching and prototyping, the ongoing assignments from the educators where concerning new design experiments.

This included:

  • 3DS Max
We got lessons in this 3D modeling program that we later on were going to use in connection with filmmaking.
  • Chroma Key
In a blue studio we learned to master filmmaking. We used our 3D made virtual cinema for shooting a concept video.
  • Smart materials
Experimenting with smart materials was very physical. Among other things, we played with fabric and special paint and sewing thread that turned transparent when adding electric power. This experimenting furthermore included connecting the smart materials to an Arduino.
  • Max/MSP
An audio workshop included a return meeting with the program Max/MSP. Arduino was part of this workshop as well and we experimented with sound manipulation and auditive feedback from physical objects connected to the program and things such as potentiometers.
